Indo-Pacific: Red Sea and East Africa to the Marquesan and Society islands, north to southern Japan, south to Lord Howe and Rapa; throughout Micronesia. Eastern Pacific: Gulf of California to Peru and at offshore islands, including the Galapagos. Replaced by M. magnificus in the Hawaiian Is.
