The Ministerio de Turismo tourist offices aren’t particularly helpful for individual travelers. This organization’s role seems to be keeping an eye on Ecuadorian tourism in general rather than answering individual tourists’ specific needs. You are more likely to get better and more relevant information from private tour companies. Fellow travelers are also good sources of information, and comment books, at hostels, cafes and restaurant often have valuable tips as well as hilarious stories. Another good source of travel tips are the trip reports filed by members of the South America Explorers in Quito. The staff of the club is well-informed about most aspects of Ecuador. You might also want to look out for the booklet This is Ecuador, published monthly, and available in most hotels and restaurants in Mariscal.
As you would expect, there is a myriad of guidebooks brimming with information that it would be too cumbersome to list. For the widest selection available of tourist books aswell as the best selection of foreign books in Ecuador, head down to Libri Mundi in the Mariscal district of Quito.
