Description: Only two hours out of Quito, is the town of Otavalo, world-renowned for its marvellous indigenous market.
Throughout the week, there is an abundance of traditional weavings and handicrafts to be found. Besides the big Saturday market, many of the local stores offer souvenirs and crafts typical of the region.
Lunch at the lovely
Hacienda Pinsaqui, constructed in 1790. The Hacienda was originally a colonial textile enterprise, employing over one thousand weavers and spinners. Over the centuries Pinsaquí has hosted numerous illustrious guests, such as
General Simon Bolivar, the revered liberator of Ecuador.
After lunch and just a few kilometres from Pinsaqui, we head on to
Cotacachi, a town that specializes in leatherwear. The main street is lined with shops selling belts, jackets, bags, vests and more. There is an abundance of products allowing you to find what you are looking for - all at amazingly cheap prices.
