Description: The Cotopaxi National Park is located about 60 kilometres south of Quito. This 85.000-acre park is roughly square in shape and centred around the magnificent Cotopaxi volcano. Rising in a steeply symmetrical glacier-capped cone to 19.460 feet [5897 metes], Cotopaxi is Ecuador's second-highest mountain and its highest active volcano.
A small, shallow lake
Limpiopungo surrounded by swampy vegetation is located at the edge of the volcano, offers a magnificent landscape and is a good place for camping.
Several Indian markets,
Saquisilí,
Pujili,
Latacunga or
Zumbahua, located just few kilometres from Cotopaxi, are a must to visit.
Saquisilí and
Pujili markets, are as authentic and non-tourist as you can find in Ecuador today. For the indigenous people, these markets are the centre of their social and economic worlds. All sorts of food, pig parts, green bananas [used to feed cattle], all kind of fruit, yarns, ropes, ceramics, heaps of used clothing, pails and stacks of shovels and axes are exhibited for sale.
Itinerary 1 day: Early in the morning, drive south from Quito through the
Avenue of the Volcanoes to reach the Cotopaxi National Park. After visiting the park, including the
Limpiopungo lake, lunch in a typical Hacienda, and after lunch visit of an Indian market and the surroundings. Afternoon drive back to Quito.
