This small island, close to the airport on
Baltra, is a popular stopping point for cruise boats because it has one of the most active nesting colonies of
frigate birds. Here visitors can see the splendid sight of the male frigate bird puffing up its big red chest pouch in a flamboyant courtship display to attract females.
Blue-footed boobies,
marine iguanas,
swallow-tailed gulls, pelicans, red-billed tropic birds and
sea lions are also plentiful on the island.
North Seymour is often the last stop on a cruise before passengers fly out from
Baltra, formerly known as South Seymour. The nearby islet of
Mosquera, only 600 m [
2,000 ft] long, has a sandy beach with a
sea lion colony, and is sometimes the first stop on a boat tour of the islands.
