Isla Pinzon on the Northwest side of
Santiago Island is a majestic rock formation. With a sloped sandy bottom on both sides, and a wall on the deep side of the rocks that drops off to 100'+, this makes an excellent dive site.
Here you'll also have a chance to see the unusual
red-lipped batfish.
Eagle Rays,
turtle,
eels, and
lobster can also be found here.
At the end of the 19th century the Pinzon
tortoise was dangerously near extinction because of depredations by whalers, sealers and scientific collectors. However, a captive breeding and re-introduction program at the Darwin Center, and the eradication of black rats that eat tortoise eggs and young hatchlings has rescued this saddleback breed.
Places to visit.
Visits to this cliff-ringed, 12 sq km [
four and a half square mile] island, also known as Duncan, are usually restricted to scientists.
