Geography
The
area is relatively
flat although
there are
some elevations
not exceeding
500 metres
in height.
The highest
areas towards
the north
east coincide
with the elevations
of the cordillera
of the Andes
. The principle
elevations
are: the
hills of Samama,
Mube, Sibimbe
and Cachari.
There
are two principle
zones in the
area: the
flat plains
and the hilly
areas. The
first is subhected
to flooding
due to rainfall
and the rise
in river tide,
the second
is well-suited
to cattle
farming.
Rivers
The
extensive
river network
is a factor
that not only
adds to the
natural beauty,
but is also
of great importance
for the economic
development
of the region.
Los Rios houses
the country’s
most fertile
terrains;
agriculture
goes back
to pre-mordial
times. The
province is
located within
the basin
of the River
Guayas. Irrigation
systems currently
in operation
benefiting
the province
are the following:
Chilintomo,
Presa Azucar,
Banco de Arena,
Milagro and
Manuel J.
Calle. Other
projects are
currently
under construction
in the area.
Demography
The
majority of
the population
is between
the ages of
15 and 29
years of age.
More than
62 per cent
of the population
inhabits the
rural sector,
although there
is a significant
increase in
the number
of people
migrating
to urban areas.
There is also
a notable
increase in
the number
of workers
employed in
the service
sector, even
though the
salary is
relatively
low. The informal
sector also
employs a
significant
amount of
people.
Climate
From
June-Dec the
climate is
dry and the
temperature
fresh. Winter
sees a substantial
amount of
rainfall (Dec-June)
but with higher
average temperatures.
The zone averages
25 degrees
centigrade.
