Beaches
There
are many beautiful
beaches and
baths in Guayas.
In the Santa
Elena peninsula
are the most
important
public baths
in in Salinas,
a huge national
and internaitonal
tourist attraction.
Salinas offers
first class
tourist facilities
and activities
such as surfing
and water
skiing.
Salinas is
located at
150 km from
Guayaquil.
Vacation periods
are Dec-March
and June-Sept.
From Salinas
other beaches
can be visited
such as Ancon,
Punta Carnero
and la Puntilla.
Playas is
situated at
90km from
Guayaquil,
and is known
for its long
sandy beaches
and for being
less cosmopolitan
than Salinas.
Other beaches
worth visiting
in the province
are Manglar
alto, Montanita,
Palmar and
Punta Blanca.
A
Tour through
Guayaquil
The
city of Guayaquil
is the economic,
financial
and commercial
heart of the
country.
There are
also various
tourist attractions
and the city
is literally
buzzing.
Attraction
include the
Simon Bolivar
Malecon and
the renovated
neighbourhood
of Las Penas,
which displayes
attractive
colourful
houses and
a warm atmosphere.
The
Malecon 2000,
Guayaquil's
waterfront
promenade,
is one of
the city's
biggest attractions.
The promenade
extends some
2.5km along
the River
Guayas, has
an abundance
of restaurants,
monuments,
gardens, playgrounds
and walkways,
away from
the hustle
and bustle
of the city.
The Malecon
is open from
7am to midnight,
daily.
Municipal
Museum
Established
in 1908, this
museum exhibits
an important
archeaological
collection
on the ground
floor.
The building
also accommodates
the municipal
library which
has its very
own collection
of classic
and contemporary
literature.
The
Cathedral
In 1838 the
town's cathedral
was built.
In 1925 it
was demolished
due to it
downtrodden
state and
a new cathedral
was built
in its place,
using donations
from financial
contributors.
The first
stone of the
new cathedral
was laid on
10th August
1924.
The
Las Penas
Neighbourhood
This
ancient neighbourhood
is the only
one in the
city which
still conserves
its colonial
character.
The neighboorhood
was burnt
down in 1897.
At the foor
of the Santa
Ana hill (La
Culata) canons
from the Republican
period are
on display.
This bastion
was the city's
only defense
against pirate
attacks.
The main street
in Las Penas
is named Numa
Pompilio Ilona,
where a range
of artwork
is displayed.
Casa
de la Cultura
The
Ecuadorian
Casa de la
Cultura in
Guayaquil
was founded
on 4th July
1945.
It's first
president
was archaeologist
and historian
Carlos Zevallos
Menendez.
The building
also houses
a library
and museum.
The
Civic Centre
Towards
the couth
of the city
is the Plaza
del Centro
Civico, where
conventions,
plays and
modern theatre
pieces are
held.
The plaza's
monument was
designed and
crafted by
famous Ecuadorian
painter Oswaldo
Guayasamin.
The
Town of Milagro
The
town of Milagro,
situated towards
the east of
Guayaquil,
has converted
itself into
one of the
province's
most progressive
towns thanks
to agricultural
production,
especially
the cultivation
of sugar cane
and pineapple.
Commerce in
the town is
particularly
strong, this
is due in
part to the
presence of
the railway
and sugar
industry.
The town has
three university
faculties:
Philosophy
and Language,
Agronomy and
Social Communication.
