Municipal Museum

Established in 1908, this museum exhibits an important archeaological collection on the ground floor.  The building also accommodates the municipal library which has its very own collection of classic and contemporary literature.

The Cathedral
In 1838 the town's cathedral was built.  In 1925 it was demolished due to it downtrodden state and a new cathedral was built in its place, using donations from financial contributors.  The first stone of the new cathedral was laid on 10th August 1924.

The Las Penas Neighbourhood

This ancient neighbourhood is the only one in the city which still conserves its colonial character.  The neighboorhood was burnt down in 1897.  At the foor of the Santa Ana hill (La Culata) canons from the Republican period are on display.  This bastion was the city's only defense against pirate attacks.  The main street in Las Penas is named Numa Pompilio Ilona, where a range of artwork is displayed.

Casa de la Cultura

The Ecuadorian Casa de la Cultura in Guayaquil was founded on 4th July 1945.  It's first president was archaeologist and historian Carlos Zevallos Menendez.  The building also houses a library and museum.

The Civic Centre

Towards the couth of the city is the Plaza del Centro Civico, where conventions, plays and modern theatre pieces are held.  The plaza's monument was designed and crafted by famous Ecuadorian painter Oswaldo Guayasamin.

The Town of Milagro

The town of Milagro, situated towards the east of Guayaquil, has converted itself into one of the province's most progressive towns thanks to agricultural production, especially the cultivation of sugar cane and pineapple.  Commerce in the town is particularly strong, this is due in part to the presence of the railway and sugar industry.  The town has three university faculties: Philosophy and Language, Agronomy and Social Communication.
