 EL ORO PROVINCE / TOURISM

The Town of Zaruma

Situated towards the south east of the province, Zaruma is one of Ecuador's most beautiful towns given its original urban feel and its construction which follows the natural formation of the terrain.  The architecture is attractive; the town enjoys a favourable climate and accommodates some 7266 inhabitants.  Zamura is located at an altitude of 1200 metres and is situated along the cordillera of Viscaya and obtained cantonal status on 26th November 1826.

The Beaches of Jambeli

These beautiful beaches can be easily accessed via road from Puerto Bolivar which takes around 30mins.  The site also houses ample tourist infrastructure.  Many tourists arrive at the spot from Cuenca.

Festivals and Traditional Dishes

The International Banana Fair is celebrated in Machala every September.  This has proven a great tourist attraction.  In the festivals of Zaruma there are also the Mining fairs, Marine expositions and Coffee festivals.

Typical dishes include rice-mote (white Andean corn) with cheese and pork and plantain with egg and cheese

Puyango Petrified Forest

Puyango Petrified forest is located approx. 1 hour from Machachi and represents the only protected patrimonial palaentological site in Latin America.  The area extends some 2,658 hectares to the province of Loja.
