As for hotels and restaurants, you won’t lose much by accepting the offer of these self-appointed guides. It’s easy enough to choose your own inexpensive hotel because almost all are equally gruesome.

For restaurants, probably your best bet is to follow one of your self-proclaimed guides, who of course will want a tip if you approve of their suggestion.
