Portoviejo, with a population of 180,000, is one of Ecuador's oldest cities, founded in 1535. Capital of
Manabi Province, the city forms the regional hub for commerce between agricultural industry inland and the fishing industry of the coast. Despite its age, the busy town is of little interest to the tourist, and most travelers pass through on their way to and from the coast.
