Agriculture
Corn, beans,
peanuts, rice
and bananas
are the provinces
main cultivated
products. Loja
is the country’s
leader in the
production of
dried beans
and pulses and
dried corn (of
the Andean provinces).
The terrain
is well suited
to cattle farming,
especially the
breeding of
bovines. The
bovine population
is the highest
along the Andean
provinces.
Mining
According
to preliminary
studies, the
province of
Loja is rich
in minerals.
Coal, copper,
iron, marble
and caolin
are among
the most important.
Marble exists
in many parts
of the province,
as does limestone.
Caolin is
primarily
found in La
Palmira.
Industry
There are
various types
of industry
in Loja. Sugar
cane production,
foodstuffs
and beverages
and artisan
products are
among the
most important.
Nevertheless,
Loja’s industrial
production
levels are
among the
lowest in
the country.
The establishment
Cfrilosa has
facilitated
Loja’s production
of cured meats,
hams and mortadella.
The foundation
of the sugar
processing
plant Monterrey
has also contributed
to the province’s
dynamic economy.
