Just
off the Panamericana
32 km [20
miles]
north to Otavalo,
lies about
the best zoo
in the country.
The facilities
are open Tuesday
to Sunday
10am to 5pm,
and you can
have an English-speaking
guide take
you round
the primarily
native fauna.
There are
several species
of monkeys,
pumas,
ocelots
and some bright
parrots and
birds. Unfortunately,
the condor
enclosure
is far too
small, but
otherwise,
the zoo is
excellent
by Latin American
standards.
Getting
there
The zoo is
about 1 km
[a
quarter of
a miles]
north of the
town of Guayllabamba,
and bus drivers
can drop you
off at the
entrance,
from where
it's about
a half hour
walk. At the
weekends there's
a free bus
service.
