The
small Andean
village of
Peguche, less
than an hour's
walk northeast
from Otavalo,
is best known
for tapestry
weaving, lovely
waterfalls
and music.
You can get
to the falls
by following
the railway
tracks east
of town and
heading northwards.
Follow the
tracks and
the cobblestone
road until
they split.
Continue on
the road up
the hill and
to the right
into the forest
park. If you
get lost,
ask for las
cascadas
and you'll
be directed
to the mist-shrouded
falls. To
get to the
village, follow
the railway
tracks all
the way. Near
the centre
of the village
you can't
miss the two
galleries
of master
tapestry weaver
and designer
Jose Cotacachi.
Jose may take
you to see
some home
weaving, but
it helps if
you speak
Spanish. If
not, it might
be better
to join a
tour to Peguche
in Otavalo.
Several groups
of well-known
Indian musicians
come from
this village.
Places
to visit
Head
2km southeast
of Peguche
to reach Cascada
de Peguche,
a beautiful
waterfall.
Near the falls
you will also
find pre-Colombian
ruins.
The trail
to the falls
is along some
old railway
tracks that
pass through
a eucalyptus
forest.
