Since
its very beginnings,
Paute has
been dedicated
to the cultivation
of its fertile
countryside,
where production
of cane sugar
predominates.
Every year,
Paute celebrates
its official
designation
as a town
with a fiesta
and a fair
showcasing
local produce. The
population
of Paute lives
near the central
hydro-electric
station and
was seriously
affectd in
1993 when
the River
Paute flooded
and caused
a landslide
at
cerro Tahual.
