Seven
kilometres
[five
miles]
south of Ibarra
is the stretched-out
village of
La Esperanza,
the best starting
point for
climbing the
daunting Volcan
Imbabura
[4,609 m
or 15,360 ft]
and the slightly
less demanding
Loma
Cubilche
[3,836 m
or 12,785 ft].
From La Esperanza,
Bolivar
gathered his
troops before
routing the
Spanish under
General Agualongo
in Ibarra.
Places
to visit
The
area from
here to Cayambe
[south
of Quito]
is home to
embroidering
families (many
of whom also
sell local
honey), a
trout-farm
at a local
hacienda,
and some stunning
countryside.
South of La
Esperanza,
the village
of Zuleta
lies fourteen
kilometres
[nearly
nine miles]
up the bumpy
old road to
Quito.
Loma
Cubilche
[3836m]
is a hill
located south
of La Esperanza
worth climbing,
and is much
easier than
the Imbabura
volcano.
