The train to San Lorenzo

The train journey down the Andes from Ibarra to San Lorenzo is one of Ecuador's great adventures. It can also be one of its worst nightmares. First, you have to find out if the train is running, and if so, when. In recent years it has been out of action for months at a time due to landslides, breakdowns and the El Nino floods of 1997 and 1998 that also caused extensive damage. The train is mainly used by tourists.

For information, call the station [06 - 2950390].
