The
city of Ambato,
destroyed
by the earthquake
in 1949 and
subsequently
rebuilt, is
the fourth-biggest
city in Ecuador
and the capital
of Tungurahua
Province.
But this rather
ugly metropolis
with a population
of well over
100,000, known
for its production
of cement,
shoes, food
processing
and distilling,
doesn't have
much to offer
tourists.
For most tourists
Ambato is
a stopover
en route to
somewhere
else. Travellers
from Quito
usually pass
through to
the popular
resort of
Banos,
or they continue
southwards
along the
Pan-American
Highway towards
Riobamba
and Cuenca.
