Ancient
Cultures
In
the past Sucumbios
was inhabited
by Cofanes,
Ionas, Secoyas
and Quichuas
who continue to exist
in the area.
The Yasuni
group was the area's main civilisation.
Missionaries
Spanish
missionaries
partly evangelised
the zone during
the colonial
era. Not much
is known about
the history
of the area
but in the
19th century
the rubber
industry took
off; in the
20th century
Limoncacha
and Lago Agrio
were the main
operational
centres of
the Summer
Language Institute
until 1980
when important
research was
carried out
regarding
the languages
and dialects
of the Amazonian
villages and
towns.
Discovery
of Oil
Petrol
was discovered
in the area
in the 1970s
after the
area had long
been abandoned
by the government
in terms of
economy. Sucumbios
was granted
provincial
status on
11th February
1989 under
the presidency
of Rodrigo
Borja Cevallos.
Migration
to the province
has been mainly
due to its
oil economy.
