Agricultural
production
is not a huge
money-spinner
in the area
due to the
majority of
the zone belonging
to Reserves
or National
Parks. However
crops that
are cultivated
include corn,
African palm,
banana, coffee,
cocoa, pineapple
and other
fruits.
Sucumbios
has an abundance
of forest
reserves.
The most significant
species are:
red
cedar, nogal,
canelo negro,
canelo amarillo, laurel.
Rivers are
teeming with
fish, which
is the area's
principle
foodstuff.
Hydro-resources
are used to
generate electricity
for the province
in what is
called Project
Jivino. The
area’s main
economic activity
is the extraction
of oil, which
occupies almost
a third of
the territory.
Due
to the characteristics
of the region,
industrial
production
is also low,
as almost
all economic
activity revolves
around oil
and gas.
Agricultural
commerce is
carried out
with the surrounding
provinces.
The transecuadorian
oilduct crosses
the province
transporting
crude oil
to the Esmeraldas.
