The easiest and probably safest option is to travel by plane, from Quito and Guayaquil to Lago Agrio or Coca. Return flights are about $70 - $90.

The journey by road takes a lot longer (from Quito to Lago Agrio it's about 8-10 hours) but is much more interesting. The road travels down from the mountains, through cloudforest and finally into the jungle, passing snow-capped mountains along the way.
