Birds
Parrots and
Macaws
of amazing
colours, the
toucan
and the green
and gold tangara
are just some
of the 550
species of
birds registered
in the Orient.
Ornithologists
from all over
the world
visit the
Amazon forest
to investigate
the huge diversity
of species,
many of which
are still
being discovered.
Mammals
An accomplished
hunter, with
its silent
steps and
flying leaps
the jaguar
reigns in
the forest.
The biggest
animal inhabiting
the Amazon
is the tapir
- some of
these hefty
mammals weigh
more than
250 kilos.
The tapir
has short
paws, a thick
neck and a
thick-skinned
barrel-shaped
body.
Other mammals
sharing the
forest include
the armadillo,
the puma
and even the
rare spectacled
bear.
