Just
across the
river are
the whitewashed
buildings
of Sevilla-Don
Bosco, a Salesian
missionary
station with
an attractive
church. It's
about a 45
minute walk
from town.
Whilst in
the Parque
Recreational,
it's worth
taking a look
inside the
Museo Arqueologico
Municipal
[Mon-Fri 8am-noon
& 1.30-4.30pm;
admission
free]. By
the entrance
there is a
poorly presented
but fascinating
display of
Shuar artefacts,
including
feather adornments,
head-dresses
made from
animal heads,
blowpipes,
basketwork,
large clay
funerary urns
traditionally
used to bury
dead children
and a replica
of a tsanta
[shrunken
skull]. Apart
from this
collection,
there is little
else of interest
in the town.
One of the
town's main
activities
is the organisation
of excursions
into the hinterland
east of Macas.
These are
easily arranged
with tour
operators
offering a
range of adventurous
three-to-six-day
treks into
the rainforest.
