Flora and Fauna
Getting there
   FLORA AND FAUNA

Flora

The fauna here has adapted itself to its pine forest habitat, creating different micro-habitats, which have caused changes in the dynamic of the paramo . Deer and bird species have found excellent refuge in these forests, which extend all the way to the lowest sectors of the zone. One noticeable recent change on visiting the forest is the reddish colouring of the trunks and branches due to a fungus which has infected the trees and consequently causing the pine population to decline in the last few years.

Vegetation: Chuquiraguas – the climber’s flower – straw, gencianas , alchemilas in the remaining vestiges of forest in the south-western part of Ruminahui, pumamaqui , romillero and quishuar trees as well as mortino, capuli , gramineas , lichens and mosses.

Fauna

Amongst the various species of fauna, a diverse range of mammals and birds can be found here.

Mammals: rabbits, deer.

Birds: Quilicos , Andean gulls, humming birds, carunculated caracaras, condors.
