Cotopaxi
,
one
of
the
highest
and
most
active
volcanoes
in
the
world,
is
located
in
the
centre
of
the
Reserve.
Ruminahui
is
situated
towards
the
north-east
and
the
valley
of
Limpiopungo
can
be
found
between
the
two
mountains.
In
spite
of
the
extremely
high
altitude,
there
are
a
diverse
range
of
mammal
and
bird
species
in
the
area.
El
Boliche
National
Recreational
Area
is
next
to
Cotopaxi
National
Park
.
One
of
the
most
interesting
facts
about
this
area
is
that
fifty
per
cent
of
it
is
covered
by
pine
forest,
most
of
which
was
planted
in
1928
in
order
to
provide
evidence
for
the
theory
that
conifers
can
adapt
to
eco-systems
at
altitude.
With
regards
to
the
management
of
Cotopaxi
National
Park
and
El
Boliche
National
Recreational
Area,
both
are
administered
separately
due
to
the
different
ways
in
which
they
need
to
be
run.
